Trends in vocal production come and go, but a handful of techniques have remained consistently effective across a decade of changing genre fashions. Here's what they are.
The vocal is almost always the element a listener is most immediately aware of. It's what they sing along to, what they quote, what they share. A technically excellent mix can be undermined by a poorly produced vocal. And a modestly mixed production can be elevated significantly by a vocal that feels intimate, present, and emotionally true.
Vocal production is the discipline of turning a raw recorded performance into the final, processed element that lives in the mix. It includes tuning, timing, comping, processing, and arrangement — doubles, harmonies, layers. Getting it right is one of the most consistently important skills in record production.
Before any processing: the performance is everything. Tuning can correct pitch. Compression can control dynamics. Neither can create commitment, emotion, or phrasing that isn't there in the original take.
The most effective vocal production starts with the best possible raw material:
Enough takes to comp from. A minimum of three full takes of each section. Comping — selecting the best phrases from multiple takes — is how professional vocal tracks are assembled. The final performance the listener hears is almost never a single take in isolation.
A comfortable recording environment. Performers produce better takes when they feel relaxed and can hear themselves well. If you're self-producing, this might mean recording after a full warm-up run-through, or at a time when you're genuinely feeling the material.
Captured at the right level. Record vocals with peaks hitting around -10 to -6 dBFS. This leaves plenty of headroom for processing without risking clipping in the chain.
Comping is selecting the best phrases from multiple takes and editing them together seamlessly. Cut at natural phrase boundaries — breath points, consonants, pauses — and crossfade the edits to remove clicks. The goal is a performance that feels like a single unified take.
Timing correction should happen after comping and before tuning. Subtle nudges of phrases to align with the groove are usually preferable to quantisation, which makes vocals feel mechanical.
Pitch correction on vocals has been standard practice in professional recording since the late 1990s. Done well, it's transparent. Done badly, it introduces artefacts or the robotic sound associated with over-processing.
The key principles:
Correct toward the natural performance. Pitch correction works best when nudging a slightly flat note toward the intended pitch, not pulling a significantly off-pitch performance into tune.
Preserve vibrato. Human vibrato is a natural variation in pitch, typically between 5 and 8 Hz. Aggressive pitch correction that flattens vibrato produces a sterile, mechanical sound.
Correct individual phrases, not whole sections. The phrases that need significant correction and the phrases that are already perfect need different handling.
A baseline vocal EQ approach that works across most styles:
For compression, two stages often work better than one: a fast-attack utility compressor for controlling peaks, followed by a slower, more musical compressor for shaping the dynamic character of the performance.
